Supporting Local and Sustainable Meats in Long-Term Care

Procuring local food
As a partner in the Serving Up Local project, the City of Hamilton aimed to increase the purchase of local food items. Two approaches were taken. The first was to increase local food procurement from current vendors to whom they have obligations under the Group Purchasing Organization (GPO) contract. The second identified an opportunity to increase the procurement of fresh proteins from new vendors which were not mandated under the GPO. Through onsite engagement and open communication with vendors, the city sourced vendors who helped them increase local food purchases by 22%.
