Case Study:

Using recycled concrete in the construction of new buildings

City of Berlin
Objective:
Using recycled concrete in the construction of new buildings

The project aimed to overcome preconceived notions against the use of recycled concrete in building construction and stimulate demand for recycled concrete as a circular input in the construction market. Results from an earlier pilot project also confirmed that early announcements and communication can be useful. As a result of the success of the pilot and subsequent uses, the City of Berlin requires recycled concrete to be used in all public high-rise construction projects. This is expected to replace approximately 100,000m3 of standard concrete annually.
